Charges expected after shooting in Pearsall

San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins said her office will initially file charges against the 17-year-old shooting suspect in juvenile court this week.

Since Saturday's shooting near Union Square, little information about the suspected shooter has been released to the public other than that he is a Tracy resident.San Francisco Police Chief Bill Scott said the shooting occurred Saturday afternoon when Pearsall, the Niners' first-round draft pick, was allegedly attacked in the Geary Street apartment block, home to some of the city's more exclusive retail stores.

According to SFPD, the suspect allegedly attempted to steal Pearsall's Rolex watch, which led to a scuffle. During the scuffle, several shots were fired. Pearsall, 23, suffered a gunshot wound to the chest, while his alleged attacker was also injured. Police quickly responded to a 911 call to the scene.

Both Pearsall and the suspected shooter were taken to Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center. Pearsall was released from hospital on SundayThe rookie wide receiver is expected to make a full recovery, while his alleged attacker remains in police custody at the hospital.

Pearsall's shooting came amid an exodus of retailers in downtown San Francisco – which has still not recovered from the COVID pandemic shutdown – including Macy's announcement that it would vacate its flagship store in Union Square. The area has been plagued by thefts and safety concerns.
