Man drives stolen vehicle and arrives to pick up friend after being arrested for drunk driving

INVER GROVE HEIGHTS, Minn. (FOX 9)According to Inver Grove Heights police, a man in a stolen truck attempted to pick up his friend from the police station after a drunken driving arrest, but led officers on a chase.

Early Sunday morning, Inver Grove Heights police arrested two people after patrol officers found them slumped in a vehicle in the 7800 block of Cahill Avenue.

The passenger was arrested on outstanding warrants and the driver was taken into custody for driving while under the influence of drugs.

What happened?

The driver was scheduled to be released to an Inver Grove Heights Police Department sobering-up party, but when her friend came to pick her up, officers discovered he had three outstanding warrants, was driving a stolen Chevy pickup with false Toyota minivan plates, and was wanted in multiple counties.

When officers tried to open the door of his car and arrest the man, the driver sped off, according to police, injuring one of the officers. The injured officer suffered minor injuries.

Officers pursued the driver, who was spotted shortly thereafter on Highway 52. ​​The pursuit ended after a South St. Paul officer performed a PIT maneuver, allowing police to arrest the suspect. Three people were found in the vehicle and two were released without charges.

What happens next?

The driver of the stolen truck is being held in the Dakota County Jail and faces new charges in addition to the warrants.
