Who won the hot dog eating contest on Netflix?

Joey Chestnut and Takeru Kobayashi have settled their rivalry once and for all.

The hot dog eating contest champions competed on Labor Day (September 2) in the live Netflix competition “Unfinished Beef,” co-hosted by Rob Riggle and Nikki Garcia.

This was the first hot dog eating contest between the two competitors in 15 years. Chestnut, 40, and Kobayashi, 46, have competed against each other several times in Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest.

They competed to see who could eat the most hot dogs and buns in 10 minutes. The winner took home $100,000 and was crowned champion.

Chestnut holds the world record for eating 76 hot dogs in 10 minutes, while Kobayashi's personal best is 64.5 from 2009.

Before the two encounters, competitive eater Matt Stonie competed in a chicken wing eating contest against Olympians Ryan Murphy, Max Irving and Ryan Lochte.

After three minutes, Stonie took the win with 53 wings compared to 36 wings for the three Olympians.

Following her competition, 24-time Guinness World Record holder Leah Shutkever attempted to set the record for the largest watermelon eaten in one minute. She set another record by eating 2,400 grams of watermelon in under three minutes.

“Chestnut vs. Kobayashi: Unfinished Beef”: Who won?

In the end it came down to the final: Chestnut against Kobayashi.

After two minutes, Chestnut had eaten 25 hot dogs; after three minutes, Kobayashi had eaten 31. After five minutes, Chestnut had eaten 51 and Kobayashi had eaten 45.

After an intense competition, Chestnut was crowned the winner.

2001 was the first year that Kobayashi took part in an eating contest.

Chestnut's first match was in 2005, and Kobayashi took first place. In 2007, Chestnut defeated Kobayashi for the first time – and the rivalry continued.

Chestnut is a 16-time Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest Champion, while Kobayashi is a six-time winner. However, it should be noted that Kobayashi was banned from Nathan's competition in 2020 due to a contract dispute.

Earlier this year, Chestnut claimed he was banned from the competition after signing an endorsement deal. Although Major League Eating (MLE) told TODAY.com there was no ban, Chestnut did not participate in the annual contest on July 4, 2024.

“There's no ban,” Richard Shea, co-founder of MLE, told TODAY.com of Chestnut. “Major League Eating wants him there. The fans want him there. Nathan's wants him there.”

How many hot dogs did Chestnut and Kobayashi eat?

Chestnut, the crowned champion, broke his own record by consuming 83 hot dogs in 10 minutes.

Kobayashi also broke his personal record with 66 hot dogs.

After the competition, Chestnut said he always wanted to eat 80 hot dogs and would not have been able to do it without Kobayashi.

“This is incredible. I've been trying to make 80 hot dogs for years and I would never have done it without Kobayashi,” he said. “He pushes me. We haven't always been nice to each other, but I love that we encourage each other to do our best.”

Kobayashi, for his part, said through an interpreter: “I feel like I have done everything I could.”
