Police catch fraudster targeting ECG customers | Crime

In a daring operation, Assin Fosu District Police arrested 38-year-old Isaac Akwasi Agyei for posing as an employee of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and defrauding customers in the Assin South District of the Central Region.

Suspect Agyei’s modus operandi involved him wearing ECG clothing and targeting customers in Assin Kwafo-krom and Appiah-krom communities while posing as a shutdown agent to generate revenue.

He demanded Gh¢ 50 from customers with debts of more than Gh¢ 200.00 and threatened to disconnect the network if they did not pay.

In some cases, Agyei went a step further by removing connection lines from meters and accepting alternative forms of payment from customers who could not afford to pay.

However, his plot was uncovered when victims became suspicious and reported him to law enforcement, which led to his arrest and detention in police custody.

Central Region General Manager Emmanuel Lumor has been informed of the incident and is urging customers to be alert to scammers posing as ECG employees.
