According to the Navy, two US Marines were attacked in Turkey

Two U.S. Marines from the USS Wasp were attacked on Monday during a port visit in Izmir, Turkey, a Navy spokesman said. A video of the incident shows a group of men putting a sack over the head of one of the Marines, holding him down while chanting “Yankee go home.”

Holly Williams, CBS News' senior foreign correspondent, said the men appeared to be members of the Turkish Youth Union – a small, nationalist, anti-American organization. The group posted the video online and wrote: “US soldiers who have shed the blood of thousands Palestinians on their hands cannot defile our country.”

Williams, who has lived and reported in Turkey for several years, said Americans are generally well treated in the country and said Turkish authorities have arrested 15 people in connection with the attack.

Turkey is an important American ally in the Middle East and a member of the transatlantic NATO alliance.

The Marines, who are part of the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit, were on shore leave at the time of the incident and were taken to a local hospital for evaluation as a precautionary measure, said U.S. Navy Commander Timothy Gorman, spokesman for the U.S. Sixth Fleet. The Marines returned to their ship later Monday.

“The Izmir Local Police and the Marine Criminal Investigation Service are cooperating in investigating the incident,” Gorman said. “No Marines have been arrested by authorities and those involved are cooperating with investigators.”

The USS Wasp is part of a Marine Expeditionary Unit on a routine deployment to the Eastern Mediterranean. The 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit recently completed a bilateral training exercise with Turkey in the region.
