Residents demand accountability for incident at medical school

Resident doctors in Kolkata are intensifying their protests, demanding accountability and the resignation of the police commissioner following a tragic incident at a medical college.

Their demonstration follows serious allegations related to the rape and murder of a doctor at a medical college. The protesting doctors have demanded the resignation of Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal, citing lapses in handling the case.

Delegation meets police chief

A delegation from the West Bengal Junior Doctors Forum met with Commissioner Vineet Goyal after a 22-hour standoff. During the meeting, they handed him a formal letter demanding his resignation and presented him with a replica of a human spine as a symbolic gesture of their demands.

The doctors have announced that they will continue their strike protest until their concerns are resolved.

Large protests throughout Kolkata

The protest has gained momentum, with staff from various private hospitals joining the cause. Protesters formed human chains in different zones of the city, amplifying their demand for justice and accountability. West Bengal government passes new laws

In response to the increasing pressure, the Government of West Bengal has unanimously passed the Aparajita Women and Children (West Bengal Criminal Law Amendment) Bill, 2024.

The aim of this new legislation is to amend the central laws at the state level and provide for stricter punishments for serious crimes against women and children. This move reflects the government's determination to prosecute such crimes with greater severity.

Suspension and arrests in RG Kar Medical College case

In a related development, the state health department has suspended Dr Sandip Ghosh, former director of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Dr Ghosh is accused of negligence and corruption. He has been remanded in judicial custody for eight days along with three others. The CBI has arrested Dr Ghosh in connection with financial irregularities at the hospital, adding another layer of controversy to the ongoing case.
