  • Secaucus police warn of new sextortion scam targeting residents

SECAUCUS, NJ — Secaucus police are warning residents about a sextortion scam that uses images of victims' homes to increase fear and intimidation. The scam, reported by a resident this week, involves emails that address the recipient by name and include photos of their street or front yard, likely taken from online mapping services such as Google Maps.

The email purports to be from a hacker who has hacked into the recipient's computer and filmed them engaging in private activities via webcam. The scammer demands nearly $2,000 in Bitcoin and threatens to release the alleged recordings to the recipient's contacts if payment is not made within 24 hours. To make the threat even more convincing, the message includes a photo of the target's home as well as personal information such as name and address.

“This is a very common spam campaign and there is no truth behind the email or threats,” Secaucus police said. Authorities stressed that if the hackers did indeed have compromising videos, they would likely include evidence in their messages.

Police believe the scammers are gaining access to personal information through large-scale data leaks by selling the data of millions of users – including names, phone numbers and addresses – on the dark web.

Police have shared screenshots of the fraudulent email to help citizens identify this type of scam and avoid falling victim to it.
