The series of koyta attacks in Pune has intensified with a new incident in Kirkatwadi. A video has surfaced showing a youth named Sagar Chavan being attacked. Chavan, who was earlier involved in the stabbing attack on Srinivas Vatsalwar in Dahanukar Colony, was lured to Sinhagad Road by someone using a girl's fake Instagram profile. Believing he was chatting with the girl he had fallen in love with, Chavan was tricked into meeting her and subsequently attacked with a koyta.

In May, a violent altercation in Pune's Dahanukar Colony ended with the stabbing of Srinivas Vatsalwar. Sagar Chavan was one of those involved in that incident. On Wednesday, Chavan was attacked by someone he thought was a friend in Pune's Kirkatwadi area. He sustained serious injuries and is currently receiving medical treatment in hospital.

The attack was part of a meticulous plan by the accused. Two months ago, the accused created a fake social media profile under the guise of a girl and engaged Chavan in several conversations. Chavan believed he was chatting with a potential romantic partner but was unaware of the deception. He fell in love with the “girl”.

After a month of interaction, Chavan was invited to meet the person behind the profile. He was lured into a dangerous situation and then attacked this morning.

Increase in violent crime in the city

This came just two days after NCP councillor and son of gangster Bandu Andekar was shot and attacked with a koyta. He later died. In another incident, a man was also killed by hooligans in Hadapsar area after he refused to share his internet hotspot with the accused.

On X, NCP MP Supriya Sule criticised the law and order situation in Pune. She uploaded the video on X and tagged state Home Minister Devendra Fadnavis, “There is no law and order in Pune. The city has turned from the 'cultural capital' to the 'crime capital' where criminals operate with impunity. This morning, a youth was seriously injured in Kirkatwadi after being stabbed with a koyta. These violent incidents are becoming more frequent and are raising concerns about whether the Maharashtra Home Department is working effectively. Common citizens are living in fear as the crime rate in Pune continues to rise. If this situation continues, it could have a negative impact on industries, investments and jobs in the city.”
