IMA President calls on modern medical practitioners to return to patient care and leave justice to the Supreme Court

New Delhi [India]September 4 (ANI): The president of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) urged doctors to get back to patient care and leave the jurisdiction of the Supreme Court of India in the protests against the rape and murder incident of the junior doctor at RG Kar College and Hospital in Kolkata.

“The sacrifice of the young postgraduate junior doctor RG Kar has stirred the conscience of the nation. The anger and frustration of the entire nation is equally directed against the fact that she was a trainee doctor and also against the fact that she was the only girl born to lower middle class parents. The entire nation has adopted her as their daughter,” the IMA letter said.

The IMA President highlighted the Supreme Court’s response in the matter and said that the entire medical community should abide by the words of the Court.

“The medical fraternity was rightly furious. The junior doctors took to the streets in anger and deep grief. The IMA demanded suspension of services except for emergencies for 24 hours. Subsequently, the Supreme Court of India took cognizance of the situation on its own initiative and formed a national task force. It also looked into the crime and the vandalism that followed. The Supreme Court told the doctors, 'Trust us. Justice and medicine should not stop.' The Supreme Court has spoken,” the letter said.

“As citizens of India, the entire medical fraternity should abide by the word of the honourable court. Patient care and safety is the primary concern of the medical fraternity. All doctors of modern medicine should revert to patient care and leave justice to the honourable Supreme Court of India,” it added.

In several states, doctors have held protests demanding justice for the victims and increased safety measures for medical personnel.

The incident sparked a war of words between the BJP and the state government, with the BJP demanding the resignation of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

The case was handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation by the local police following an order from the Calcutta High Court. (ANI)
