2 police officers in Phoenix were injured in shooting

PHOENIX – Two Phoenix police officers were injured in a shooting after responding to a report of car theft Tuesday night, authorities said.

The two officers found the suspect around 6:25 p.m. in the area of ​​16th Street and McDowell Road, police said.

“When they arrived, the suspect ran and jumped a fence,” Phoenix Deputy Police Chief Mike Sullivan said during a press conference. “Our officers gave chase and were met with gunfire.”

Both officers were hospitalized at Banner – University Medical Center Phoenix.

A suspect has been arrested, police said.

How are the injured Phoenix police officers doing?

The shooting left one officer critically injured and the other seriously injured, police said.

“One of our officers was rescued thanks to his bulletproof vest and is in stable condition,” said Sullivan. “The second officer is currently fighting for his life in critical condition.”

There is currently no threat to anyone in the community, he added.

A few hours after the press conference, Sergeant Phil Krynsky said the officers were still in the hospital early Wednesday morning. He also said one of the officers was still fighting for his life due to severe injuries.

No further information was provided.
