Weekend raid arrests over 1,000 suspects

Weekend raid arrests over 1,000 suspectsIn a dramatic show of force, Gauteng authorities arrested more than 1 000 suspects in a high-profile operation from August 30 to September 1. The operation, led by Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni, spanned several high-crime areas and targeted a wide range of serious crimes from murder to drug trafficking.

The operation, a joint effort by various law enforcement agencies, was characterized by a series of strategic roadblocks and targeted raids. According to Colonel Noxolo Kweza, the operation was aimed at apprehending individuals wanted for a range of crimes, including murder, attempted murder, rape, business robbery, drug trafficking and illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.

The extensive operation also resulted in significant seizures. Stolen vehicles and firearms were seized in Soshanguve and Akasia, highlighting the impact of the operation on local crime. “In northern Pretoria, the seizure of a stolen vehicle and the arrest of several suspects were among the highlights,” noted Kweza.

The operation involved the Department of Home Affairs, Gauteng Traffic Police, Tshwane Metropolitan Police Department (TMPD), Gauteng Traffic Police, CPF and private security companies. Their coordinated action resulted in the arrest of over 800 wanted suspects, with 145 arrests directly linked to crimes against women and children.

In addition to these arrests, the operation also addressed other pressing issues. More than 20 people were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol, over 60 illegal immigrants were arrested and eight unlicensed alcohol outlets were closed for violations of regulations.

The suspects must now face the justice system, with court appearances expected in the coming days. This operation underlines the robust and multi-faceted approach to tackling crime in Gauteng and represents a significant step towards greater public safety.
