Man in Glasgow caught driving under the influence of alcohol with billiard ball in sock

James Kelly was arrested on June 13, 2023 at 1:15 p.m. after police received an anonymous call that he was driving under the influence of alcohol.

Police searched the area and stopped the 59-year-old in his vehicle on Cantyne Road in the East End.

When officers spoke to him, they noticed that he was slurring his words and sweating.

Since they also noticed the smell of alcohol, a breathalyzer test was carried out at the side of the road.

Kelly failed. He was arrested and searched.

A sock with a billiard ball in it was found in his pocket.

Kelly appeared at Glasgow Sheriff Court last week after pleading guilty to driving with an alcohol content of 108 micrograms per 100ml of breath.

He also admitted to owning the weapon.

At the hearing, his lawyer stated: “He was having problems with his marriage. That seems to be the background. He is now separated from his wife and things are going much better for him.”

“He doesn't know why he had it [the sock with the pool ball in it]. It was stupidity on his part, fuelled by alcohol.

“He is employed and has a relatively good employment record.”

Sheriff Anna Reid said: “I am concerned about the reading level on the day, which was very high.”

Because of the traffic offense, Kelly's license was revoked for 15 months and he had to participate in a rehabilitation program for alcohol-impaired drivers.

He was also sentenced to 12 months probation and must seek addiction treatment if his supervisor asks him to do so.

Because of his possession of the weapon, he was handcuffed for ten weeks and had to stay at home between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m.
