Injury forces Grigor Dimitrov to withdraw from the quarterfinals of the US Open

Grigor Dimitrov has ended his participation in the US Open due to an injury that forced him to withdraw from his quarterfinal match against Frances Tiafoe on the Arthur Ashe Center Court at the Flushing Meadows complex in New York. Tiafoe was leading 6-3, 6-7(5), 6-3 and had a 4-1 lead in the fourth set when Dimitrov decided to retire.

Despite receiving medical attention between the third and fourth sets, Dimitrov was unable to continue, ending his New York journey on a disappointing note. Tiafoe secured a place in the semifinals, where he will face fellow countryman Taylor Fritz. Looking back on his victory, Tiafoe expressed mixed emotions, saying: “Of course, this is not the way I wanted to continue, but I'm happy to have made it to the semifinals here for the second time. I hope you will see me face another American in the semifinals.”

After the match, Dimitrov spoke openly about his situation, attributing his injury to the physical demands of the tournament, particularly his previous round against Andrey Rublev. He admitted that his recovery process had been slower and that he had been feeling unwell even before the match. “Yes, I think (the injury) is a combination of everything,” Dimitrov explained, noting that despite the circumstances, he needed to “keep his head up” and focus on what lies ahead.

Dimitrov also stressed that he needs to rethink his preparation methods and admitted that improvements are possible. He praised Tiafoe's performance and acknowledged that the American pushed him to the limit during the match. Dimitrov expressed his determination to keep going despite the setbacks, saying: “It's piling up… I just need to put that aside now and focus on what's ahead. There are a lot of good things ahead.”

Looking at the bigger picture, Dimitrov mentioned that this was the second Grand Slam tournament in a row where he faced similar challenges, but based on his experience, he knew when it made sense to continue and when not. He accepted the situation and focused on future opportunities.
