Hiker found dead after disappearing in Sierra Nevada

A hiker who had been missing for two weeks was found dead by search crews in the Stanislaus National Forest.

The body of 71-year-old Michael Moore was discovered by a search team with dogs on Sunday, Sept. 1, the Tuolumne County Sheriff's Office said.

Moore, of the Grass Valley area, disappeared after setting out on a hike on Aug. 16 that, according to his wilderness permit, was from the Gianelli Trailhead to Powell Lake, about 2½ miles in the Emigrant Wilderness. On Aug. 17, his dog and backpack were found in the opposite direction of his planned route. The dog was not injured.

Although no court report has been filed yet, the sheriff's office said, “During the investigation, nothing was found that would indicate a crime was committed.”

• The Tuolumne County Sheriff's Office also reported the discovery of human remains on August 29 in the Stanislaus River Canyon northwest of Twain Harte.

The Sept. 3 announcement did not identify the suspect but noted that the missing man's remains were about 3 miles from where a truck linked to the two missing men was found in June.

The men, Ronnie Henley, 57, and Ronnie Duncan, 45, were last seen in March when they reportedly tried to travel from the Modesto area to a property owned by Henley in Jupiter Township in Tuolumne County.
