The Galveston City Marshal was on his way home when he spotted a man suspected of killing the murdered Harris Co. Deputy

GALVESTON, Texas – As KPRC 2 continues to learn more about the murder of a Harris County 4th District Deputy Sheriff, we're learning more about how his suspected killer was arrested.

Sergeant Nicholas Yeley of the Galveston City Marshals explained how the arrest went down in an interview with KPRC 2 reporter Corley Peel. He first noted how well the gunman's vehicle was described. From then on, it was an all-hands-on-deck situation.

“They described it in great detail, which made it easy for us to be alert and watchful,” he explained. “We were all paying attention. We were all on the lookout. We wanted to find this person.”

Despite having waited so long, Sergeant Yeley said the situation looked grim and his shift was almost over.

“And all day we watched and nothing happened,” he said. “I clocked out and got ready to go home, jumped in my personal car … and drove home and talked to my dad.”

Then things took an unexpected turn and the sergeant had to end the phone call with his father.

“I just happened to look over and said, 'Oh, Dad, I have to go. I'll call you back,' and there was the suspect's car in a parking lot – he was pulling into the parking lot and by chance I was in the right place at the right time,” explained Sergeant Yeley. “My goal was to find him and call the troops.”

Because he was not wearing a uniform, he was able to act quickly and call the Galveston Police Department, who were dispatched to the scene and arrest the suspect. When the suspect realized he had been spotted, he sped off in his vehicle, prompting a brief chase by authorities.

Near the Causeway Bridge, the suspect drove his vehicle into the water. Houston Transtar cameras caught him swimming in the water before police sent a boat to pick him up.

However, within a few minutes, officers managed to catch the shooter – which took Sergeant Yeley by surprise, as he had been waiting and looking for the shooter for so long.

“It took a lot of heroes to do what they did,” he said. “And they need the recognition. I was just in the right place to get them where they needed to be. It's a phenomenal feeling, don't get me wrong, but those are the heroes that got him.”

Although Sergeant Yeley did not know Deputy Constable Husseini personally, the two were related through their work in the police force.

“We are all brothers and sisters,” he said. “We are a big community, but we love each other. And he is an extended family to all of us. That's it. It hurts. We are all here grieving with this family.”
