Singer Gary Phelan, best known for his time in Fame Academy died in Dubai at the age of 42.

His death was confirmed by his friends on social media last month; the cause of death has not yet been determined.

The singer was part of Fame AcademySeason 2 in 2003.

Phelan's manager Simon Hanning wrote on Facebook that the singer was found in his Dubai apartment and subsequently launched a fundraiser to cover the costs of bringing his body back to the UK. Daily Mail reported.

His Facebook post on August 15 reads: “I am so sad to share the tragic news that my mate, friend and artist I managed, Gary Phelan, was found in his apartment in Dubai over the weekend. I am deeply devastated and cannot yet put into words how this news has left his family and friends. He was loved by so many people and I already miss our conversations, him sending me his latest song he had written and the general banter we had.

“We did some amazing things together, he was everything you could want in a friend. It really breaks my heart.”

He later updated well-wishers on the Just Giving page, saying: “Dear all, We did it! Gary was brought back to the UK over the weekend. I have spoken to Gary's family and they have been overwhelmed by the many heartfelt messages and generosity as we have all come together for a common goal. There will be another update from the family in a few days with details of Gary's funeral.

“But first of all, thank you all so much. I never thought we would reach our goals so quickly. Every single person who could help did their part. Lots of love to all of you and lots of love to Gary.”

Fame Academy was hosted by Patrick Kielty and Cat Deeley. In the reality TV series, talented musicians who live in the same house compete for a prize over several weeks.
