14-year-old boy appears in court for murder of 80-year-old man

A murder investigation has been launched after Bhim Kohli died on Sunday evening from serious injuries sustained while walking his dog Rocky in Franklin Park, just seconds from his home in Braunstone Town, Leicestershire.

The teenager appeared before Leicester Magistrates' Court, which acts as a youth court, on Thursday and was remanded in custody until he appears before Leicester Crown Court on Thursday afternoon.

The boy, who cannot be identified due to his age, spoke only to confirm his name and date of birth.

Four other children – a 14-year-old girl and a boy and two 12-year-old girls – were arrested on suspicion of murder but released without further action.

Leicestershire Police said a post-mortem examination had shown Mr Kohli died as a result of a neck injury and further investigations were pending.

His family described him as a “loving, caring person” who enjoyed walking the family dog in the park “several times a day.”

Leicestershire Police said they voluntarily contacted the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) due to previous contact with the victim.

After further contacts with the supervisory authority, the police have now made a binding report.
