Mapusa Deputy Commissioner of Police Sandesh Chodankar said the two teachers, identified as Sujal Gawade and Kanishka Gadekar, were arrested after the child's parents filed a complaint at the Colvale police station.

Police arrested two primary school teachers on Thursday for allegedly beating up a nine-year-old student at their school in North Goa when he tore a page from his textbook, an official said.

The incident occurred earlier this week, he said.

Speaking to PTI, Mapusa Deputy Commissioner of Police Sandesh Chodankar said the two teachers, identified as Sujal Gawade and Kanishka Gadekar, were arrested after the child's parents filed a complaint at Colvale police station.

“The fourth-grade student of Shree Saraswati Vidya Mandir Primary School in Vagali-Camurlim was allegedly beaten up by the teachers. He was admitted to the hospital with injuries on his thighs, legs and back,” he said.

According to the complaint, teachers beat the student because he tore a page out of his textbook.

Chodankar said charges have been filed against the teachers under Section 82 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) Juvenile Justice Act and Section 8(1) of the Goa Children's Act.
