Tamil teacher of a private school near Pollachi arrested for corporal punishment

On Thursday, police arrested a Tamil teacher from a private school near Pollachi on suspicion of physically abusing a 17-year-old student.

Police said Suresh Kumar, 42, a resident of Postal Colony, was arrested at Mahalingapuram police station on the complaint of a Class 12 student.

According to police, Kumar was working as a Tamil teacher at Sri Lathangi Vidhya Mandir Matriculation School near Pollachi. During the Tamil class on Tuesday, the teacher asked the students to write down a section of the classic poem Purananuru.

Police said the student misunderstood the teacher's instruction and wrote a different poem. The teacher was upset with the student's behavior and allegedly hit him with hands and an exam board. The affected student sought outpatient treatment at the district hospital in Pollachi, police said.

The Mahalingapuram police have filed charges against the teacher for violating sections 115 (2) (intentionally causing hurt), 118 (1) (intentionally causing grievous hurt by dangerous weapon or means), 133 (assault or criminal force with intent to dishonour a person, except with grave provocation) and 351 (3) (criminal intimidation) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The teacher was produced in court on Thursday and released.
