Police update murder case of 23-year-old man shot in North York

The Toronto Police Service (TPS) is expected to provide an update on a murder investigation after a man gunned down in front of an apartment complex in North York in June.

Marsell Bryan, 23, was identified as the city's 44th murder victim of 2024 when he was shot around 3 a.m. on June 27 in the area of Cherokee Boulevard near Finch Avenue East and Victoria Park Avenue.

Police believe two suspects opened fire. Authorities believe it was a targeted shooting. It is unclear whether Bryan lives in the apartment building at 165 Cherokee Boulevard.

Residents said they initially thought fireworks were going off in the parking lot at the center of the apartment complex, but soon realized it was gunfire. The shooting incident led some residents to express concern about gun violence following Bryan's death.

TPS Detective Sajeev Nair is expected to give an update on the investigation on Thursday at 1 p.m.
