Amarillo police arrest two drug trafficking suspects

Amarillo police said Thursday that two suspected drug traffickers were recently arrested on state and federal charges.

“In June 2024, members of the Proactive Criminal Enforcement (PACE) Unit, along with the DEA, conducted an investigation into the drug trafficking activities of two suspects who obtained fentanyl from sources outside of Texas and transported it to Amarillo for distribution,” an APD community update states. “On July 3, 2024, members of the PACE Unit received information that these two suspects were traveling back to Amarillo from Oklahoma City and conducted a traffic stop of their vehicle upon their return to Amarillo.”

While searching the vehicle, officers found approximately 22 grams of fentanyl powder in a fake Sprite can. After further investigation, officers also learned that the suspects were importing fentanyl from Oklahoma City and Albuquerque in quantities of up to 2,000 to 3,000 pills at a time, according to APD. At the time of the search, “both suspects were released pending further investigation,” according to APD.

The information was later presented to a federal grand jury, which issued indictments and arrest warrants against both suspects for conspiracy and possession with intent to distribute.

On Sunday, September 1, a PACE officer located the two suspects, identified as Jacob Newby, 32, and Lilith Paparo-Prieto, 29. They were arrested and booked into the Potter County Jail.
