Miami-Dade man tried to kill a law enforcement officer who took his Lexus and fled to Indiana, police said

A northwest Miami-Dade man shot a tow truck driver multiple times in June as his car was being impounded, police said. Officers found him two months later in an Indianapolis suburb. Now he's back in South Florida to face charges.

According to a police report, the first incident occurred on July 31 at approximately 9:25 p.m. when Miami-Dade Police officers were dispatched to the 400 block of Northeast 160th Terrace in the Intracoastal District.

According to investigators, the victim worked as a tow truck driver for Heat Recovery & Towing and had attempted to repossess Rony Guerrier's silver 2018 Lexus NX300.

According to authorities, the driver located the Lexus using a license plate reader and backed up his tow truck to begin towing the car.

Only when he started to take back the car did he notice that 34-year-old Guerrier was sitting in the car.

Shortly after Guerrier got out of the Lexus, the victim identified himself as a repossession agent and explained to Guerrier that the car had been repossessed at the request of the lienholder.

Investigators said the situation escalated after the victim told police Guerrier fired a shot, forcing him to flee to his car.

According to police, the victim was afraid that Guerrier might try to shoot him again, so he left the Lexus on the ground and drove away.

However, when the victim fled the scene in his tow truck, investigators said Guerrier followed him in the Lexus.

While following the victim in his car, Guerrier fired a second shot directly at the tow truck. Authorities said the tow truck was equipped with video surveillance, which investigators said recorded the entire altercation, including the gunshots.

When Miami-Dade police arrived, Guerrier and the Lexus were no longer at the scene, according to the report. Police said the victim did not suffer any injuries and his truck was not struck by bullets during the incident.

An investigation into Guerrier's identity and whereabouts was quickly launched and his car was entered into the national law enforcement database as a “vehicle of a serious criminal,” the report said.

Two days later, on August 2, 2024, at approximately 2:45 p.m., Speedway, Indiana police found Guerrier's 2018 Lexus NX300 in the parking lot of an area apartment complex and took Guerrier into custody without incident.

Upon his arrest, police noted that Guerrier had attempted to alter his appearance by cutting off his medium-length dreadlocks, but confirmed that they found a bag containing his shed hair in the Lexus.

A search of the car also found a Los Angeles Lakers jersey that Guerrier was wearing during the Miami-Dade incident, further confirming his identity, investigators said.

Although no weapon was found in the Lexus, investigators said they found 9mm ammunition and a holster.

Investigators said Guerrier later told police he had pawned the gun to finance his escape from Florida.

After being read his Miranda rights, Guerrier admitted to selling the gun at a Gainesville pawn shop on August 1.

Investigators confirmed that the weapon, a 9mm Glock Model 17, was noticed by authorities and is currently being held as evidence for a forensic comparison with a 9mm cartridge case recovered at the crime scene.

Prison records show that Guerrier is charged with attempted premeditated murder, shooting or throwing a deadly projectile and tampering with evidence.

Guerrier was extradited to Miami-Dade County for prosecution and officially arrested on Wednesday. He has been held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center since Thursday, where his bail has not yet been set.
