Details emerge after standoff with law enforcement in Superior

SUPERIOR – We're learning new details about an incident Wednesday night in Superior that sparked a major police response.

Mineral County Sheriff Ryan Funke said several people called 9-1-1 shortly before 8:30 p.m. because several shots were fired near the Superior post office.

Officers from the Mineral County Sheriff's Office, along with the Montana Highway Patrol, responded to the scene and found a man asking for help.

Sheriff Funke said that after speaking with the individual, officers determined that he was the suspect who had fired numerous shots in the area.

The suspect told authorities that he was armed with several firearms before entering a mobile home and barricading himself inside.

Sheriff Funke says that because of the danger to the public, the Missoula County Sheriff's Office tactical team was requested to the scene.

However, the suspect surrendered and was taken into custody without incident before the Missoula team arrived.

Officers were given a search warrant for the suspect's RV and the crime scene was cordoned off.

Sheriff Funke says the incident remains under investigation.

The suspect is being held at the Mineral County Detention Center.

“Thank you to all responding and assisting agencies: Montana Highway Patrol, Missoula County, Missoula City, Superior Fire and Superior EMS,” Sheriff Funke said in a press release.
