FC Schalke 04: Hardly avertable! Former star now faces worst case scenario

Cedric Brunner has been under contract with FC Schalke 04 for two years. He joined the Pottklub in 2022 after being relegated from the first Bundesliga with Arminia Bielefeld. His years at Schalke were not particularly successful either.

In the first year, the team went back down to the second division, and in the second year, the worst-case scenario threatened: relegation to the third division. After these two years, Brunner and FC Schalke 04 parted ways again – and now he is faced with a bitter scenario.

FC Schalke 04: Brunner still without a club after leaving S04

In the second half of the 2022/23 relegation season, he was one of the most reliable players. Former coach Thomas Reis regularly relied on him, but his minor injuries kept setting him back. In his two years at Schalke, he played 47 times for the Royal Blues.

Groin injuries, knee problems and muscular injuries – Brunner has always had to struggle with his body. Last season, unlike the season before, he was no longer able to be the mainstay that people had expected him to be in the second division.

His contract expired in June and more than two months later he still hasn't found a new club. In recent weeks there have been hardly any rumours about a possible move for the right-back. At the start of the new season he is still without a club.

Former Schalke player faces bitter scenario

There is no transfer in sight, and Brunner will probably remain without a club for a while. That is a tough situation for an active professional – after all, he has been without team training and without proper preparation for over two months. So if he does find a new club soon, he will have to register at the back.

A successful end to the 30-year-old's career is unlikely. It will be exciting to see when Brunner will find a new club. As of now, the former S04 professional cannot recommend himself for a new challenge.
