Georgia school shooting: 5 important questions investigators are asking about the suspected teen killer

A law enforcement expert discussed what authorities in Georgia are focusing on as they continue their investigation into the tragic shooting at Apalachee High School.

Matthew Fagiana, a retired police sergeant and law enforcement consultant, told Fox News Digital that Georgia's top law enforcement officials continue to investigate Colt Gray's motive while working on ways to prevent future mass shootings in the community.

The suspected shooter, 14-year-old Gray, opened fire at the high school, killing two teachers and two students.

Fagiana said law enforcement is focusing on the 14-year-old's past and whether he had any known contacts with the victims. The law enforcement expert also said investigative units will likely carefully comb Gray's home as well as the high school.

“I can only assume the crime scene at the school is pretty large,” he said. “Crime scenes like this require very careful investigation and evidence collection – things like logging evidence locations and spent shell casings.”

“Fagiana said investigators are trying to determine what prompted the suspected shooter to open fire. A key aspect of apprehending the suspect will be the interviews he gives investigators,” he said. “Anytime we have someone committing a mass murder, one of the most important questions we try to answer is 'why.'”

“And because many school shooters kill themselves or are killed by police to prevent further harm to others, we often don't know why they did it and can only come up with theories based on their history and the evidence they leave behind,” he said.
