MP police identify suspects involved in videotaping and releasing video of gruesome rape in Ujjain – The Week

Madhya Pradesh Police have arrested three to four people for allegedly filming a gruesome rape incident in Ujjain and sharing it on social media. According to police, teams have been deployed to nab the accused.

According to Ujjain police, the suspects are at different locations and efforts are on to nab them.

“We have identified three to four suspects who shot a video of the incident and made it viral. As per our information, all of them are in different locations and police teams are trying to nab them,” Om Prakash Mishra, City Superintendent of Police (CSP) in Kotwali district, told PTI. Mishra said the victim's health condition was stable and she was currently recovering at her residence.

According to police, the victim, a scrap collector, was forced to drink alcohol by the accused Lokesh and he raped her in broad daylight, near a busy intersection in Ujjain.

“The accused Lokesh promised to marry her, forced her to drink alcohol and then raped her on Wednesday. Some passersby filmed the incident instead of stopping the crime. Lokesh later fled the scene. After the woman filed a complaint when the effect of alcohol wore off, Lokesh was arrested,” Mishra said.

Politicians from different political camps and netizens criticised the police inaction and demanded harsh punishment for the accused. Congress national spokesperson Shama Mohamed tweeted: “A woman was raped in broad daylight on the streets of Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, while passersby filmed instead of helping. Where are we heading as a society? Since this happened in a BJP-ruled state, the mainstream media and BJP leaders may not express the same outrage as in the Kolkata case.”
