County Executive's Corner: Call to Action in Suicide Prevention Month

As we observe Suicide Prevention Month this September, we are reminded of the tragic reality that countless families, friends and neighbors are affected by suicide each year. One life lost in this way is already too many, and here in Rockland County, 20 people have taken their lives in 2023 alone.

My administration is committed to raising awareness, providing resources and creating an environment where people with mental health issues are heard and supported.

I ask residents to look out for some warning signs. While these signs are not always obvious, knowing them can make a big difference. These signs may include:

 Talking about the desire to die, expressing feelings of hopelessness.

 Withdrawal from friends, family and activities.

 Extreme mood swings or unusual behavior.

 Giving away possessions or saying goodbye to loved ones.

 Increased substance abuse or risky behavior.

It is important to remember that these are all signs that someone is crying out for help. If you notice any of these behaviors in someone, you should reach out to them because a simple conversation can open the door to the support they need.

To the people of Rockland: Never forget that each of us plays a critical role in creating a culture where mental health is top of mind and people feel safe to seek help without prejudice.

By raising awareness about mental illness, we reduce the stigma surrounding mental illness and create a more supportive environment for everyone.

This Suicide Prevention Month and beyond, let's all commit to looking out for one another. If you or someone you know is struggling, don't hesitate to reach out.

I would like to remind our families that our mental health resources are extensive and encourage you to contact our Rockland County Department of Mental Health at (845) 364-2391 for assistance in connecting with counseling services, crisis intervention, or referral to specialized care.

In addition, the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline is available 24 hours a day at 988 for immediate assistance. The hotline provides confidential support to anyone in distress and connects them with local resources. For more information, visit 988lifeline.org

Always remember that help is just a phone call away.
