Rich Homie Quan has turned his life around with music after spending time in prison

Quan had a difficult path to fame. He originally wanted to be a baseball player, but his life took a sharp turn when he dropped out of college and became a criminal after losing his job.

In 2011, the rapper was sentenced to 15 months in prison. It was during this time that he first discovered his passion for creativity.

In an interview with XXLQuan reflected on his time in prison: “When I was locked up, I started thinking about what I was good at. As a child, I loved reading. Literature was my favorite subject. I loved creative writing classes. When I was locked up, I read my first book in prison. I've been reading for years, but my first book in prison I read with understanding.”

He continued, “When I learned how to read a book properly, it took my mind to another place. After that, I started writing poetry, and after that, my poems didn't sound like poems anymore, they sounded like rhymes. I thought, 'Let's see if I can put a beat on it.'”

After his release, Quan says he initially struggled to be taken seriously for his music until he released a few mixtapes and was able to “set myself apart from everyone else.”

He added: “I never thought I would make it this far with music. Music was just a hobby at first. I never thought I would be on stage and rocking shows. After I got out of prison, I started taking it more seriously and that's when my dream came true.”
