Indian-origin man arrested after attempting to run over police cars with stolen SUV – Video

A 25-year-old man of Indian origin has been arrested and charged with several offences after allegedly attempting to run over patrol cars with a stolen vehicle in the Canadian province of Ontario. The incident occurred on September 3 at a Tim Hortons drive-thru near Westwood Mall in Mississauga when officers attempted to arrest the accused while he was allegedly driving a stolen SUV. Video of the incident was widely shared on social media, and shows the red Ford Bronco ramming several police vehicles as the driver attempts to flee from officers.

Peel Regional Police said the suspect is Ramanpreet Singh of Brampton, CBC Canada reported. According to the report, police were called to the area after receiving reports that an armed individual in a Ford Bronco had returned to the location after stealing from a nearby store several weeks ago.

According to police, the defendant's SUV was stolen in London, Ontario. Police cars surrounded the vehicle to prevent the driver from fleeing, but the defendant attempted to flee – and numerous videos taken at the scene and posted on social media show him ramming several police cars in the process.

“It was a very dynamic situation… There was a serious risk that not only bystanders, but also police officers and the perpetrator himself would be seriously injured by his conduct,” Const. Nikhil Chakravarthy said in an interview with CBC News.

“It's truly incredible that officers were able to resolve this incident without anyone getting hurt,” he added. However, according to a police press release on Wednesday afternoon, the defendant in this case suffered only minor injuries.

According to Chakravarthy, police officers managed to hold the SUV and prevent the driver from escaping. “But as you can see in the videos that have now gone viral, the driver is desperately trying to free himself – and at one point even drives into the front of one of the patrol cars.”

Witness David Porca told CBC News that as he pulled into the parking lot, he saw the SUV on top of one of the police vehicles. “It tried to get away – backed up … and rammed into the back of one of the cars,” he said.

The man then tried to get out of the SUV's passenger window, Porca said, before an officer fired a taser at him.
