Naval officer arrested for ‘sexual intercourse by fraudulent means’

Cochin: City Police have arrested a naval officer and booked him under Section 69 of the new Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for sexual intercourse using fraudulent meansThe plaintiff in this case is a woman from Punjab.
According to a police statement, the arrested man is Ramavath Sunil Naik (26) from Hyderabad. He is a lieutenant in the INS Vikrant.
According to police, the accused befriended the woman, who was working in Shimla, through Instagram. The accused then allegedly asked her to come to Kochi. The woman then got a job in a hotel in Kadavanthara. The couple then lived together in a rented house in Vyttila. After they allegedly had sexual intercourse under the promise of marriage, he broke his promise. The city police added in the statement that the woman who questioned this was physically assaulted by the accused.
According to Section 69 of the BNS, whoever, by fraudulent intent or by promising to marry a woman without any intention of keeping that promise, has sexual intercourse with her, which sexual intercourse shall not amount to rape, shall be punished with imprisonment for a term which may extend to 10 years and with a fine.
Kadavanthara police said that the accused was arrested on Thursday and the offence took place after July 2024. The accused was produced before the court and remanded in judicial custody.
