“A New Summer”, ending explained: This is what REALLY happens in the Netflix series

“A New Summer”: We explain the end of the Netflix series

Even if our author only loves the dance scene in the opening credits, which doesn't fit the series at all, or Meghann Fahy's dress in “A New Summer”, in this case she has no choice but to write about the spectacular end of the crime series. Who was it, who killed Benji and Amelia's wedding in the truest sense of the word?

Caution, here are massive spoilers for “A New Summer” on Netflix!

“A New Summer”, ending explained: This is how the characters are connected

“A New Summer” is told on several time levels, so it's easy to get confused. One thing is certain: a murder occurs near the beginning of the series, which is why Benji from the super-rich Winbury family and the relatively normal Amelia can't celebrate their wedding. The reason: the bride Amelia's maid of honor was found on the private beach in front of the beach house in Nantucket. But who is responsible for the death of this cheerful woman? And who actually has what secret here?

Greer Garrison Winbury and Tag Winbury in “A New Summer”

Greer Garrison Winbury (Nicole Kidman) and her husband Tag (Liev Schreiber) lead a seemingly perfect life: he comes from a wealthy family, she is a successful writer, both parents of three sons, who all gather together at the family beach house on Nantucket to celebrate the wedding of their middle brother Benji.

But appearances are deceptive: Greer has kept more than one secret about her own origins from her sons. And Tag? Well, the permanently stoned or drunk Tag has never worked a day in his life and doesn't take his loyalty to his successful wife Greer all that seriously. And the sons? Greer keeps a close eye on them and gives them a very long leash from the start.

PS: If father and sons take pills together for breakfast, we don't want to know what they do after 8 p.m.

Amelia, Benji and Shooter in “A New Summer”

Amelia (Eve Hewson) and Benji (Billy Howle) want to get married. Tragically, Amelia doesn't seem to be entirely sure of her feelings for the middle-aged Winbury. She is reluctant to accept that she will have to stay on site after the death of her maid of honor and sign a non-disclosure agreement. Shooter Duvall (Ishaan Khattar) is often there to help her: Benji's best man and a long-time family friend with a well-trained six-pack and seemingly huge amounts of money. This is too much for Amelia, who comes from an ordinary background, but she feels extremely attracted to him – and can't guarantee anything, especially not a wedding.

Tom and Abby Winbury

Tom (Jack Reynor) and Abby (Dakota Fanning) Winbury are young people who are aware of their white privilege and live it out to the full. They are really unpleasant people: Tom is having an affair with the much older family friend Isabel, steals, uses drugs and deals pills. Meanwhile, his pregnant wife Abby bosses around the housekeeper Gosa, can be really mean (we'll just say: wedding cake) and most of the time puts on a brave face. Because if there's one thing Abby doesn't want, it's to be ordinary and poor – no matter what the cost.

Merritt in “A New Summer”

Merritt (Meghann Fahy) is the “loose cannon”, the cheerful outsider in the family constellation of the current and future Winburys. She is Amelia's maid of honour, laughs loudly and is smart – but has fallen in love with the wrong man, namely family father Tag, started an affair with him and is now pregnant with his child.
