What happened?

On April 12-13, 1970, the Mainz pediatrician Margot Geimer and her 17-year-old daughter Dorothee were brutally murdered in their own home. The perpetrator left no trace, despite the extremely gruesome nature of the crime. A few months after the crime, the police arrested Klaus Bräunig, then 26 years old. He came to the attention of the officers after he had voyeuristically observed female students. The young Bräunig was then interrogated for several days in a row without a lawyer and for hours. According to his statement, he confessed to the crime under pressure from the investigators. He later retracted his confession, but confessed to the crime twice more, only to retract these confessions again.
