The woman was allegedly raped by a man named Lokesh after he forced the victim to drink alcohol in broad daylight on a footpath in Kayala Pharak area of Ujjain.

Ujjain police have arrested a man accused of filming the rape of a garbage collector by a man in broad daylight on a sidewalk in the temple town on Saturday.

According to police, the accused Mohammad Salim shot the video of the heinous crime that took place on Wednesday and posted it on social media platforms. Police said that Salim, who hails from Nagda town, already has a criminal past.

In a horrific incident, the woman was allegedly raped by a man named Lokesh after he forced the victim to drink alcohol in broad daylight on a footpath in Kayala Pharak area of Ujjain.

Moreover, instead of taking any action, some miscreants shot a video of the incident and made the video viral by posting it on social media. The incident triggered widespread outrage and a political confrontation between the Congress party and the ruling BJP.

Based on the victim's complaint, the police arrested the rape suspect. Police said the accused Lokesh promised to marry her, gave her alcohol to drink and then raped her on Wednesday.

“The accused Lokesh promised to marry her, forced her to drink alcohol and then raped her on Wednesday. Some passersby filmed the incident instead of stopping the crime. Lokesh later fled the scene. After the woman filed a complaint when the effect of alcohol wore off, Lokesh was arrested,” said Om Prakash Mishra, superintendent of police of Kotwali town.

CM Yadav promises strict punishment for accused

The Chief Minister of the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh, Mohan Yadav, said that the guilty would be punished severely and no one would be spared.

“In Madhya Pradesh, the rule of law prevails. Anyone who commits a crime will be punished severely. No one will be spared. Be it Ujjain or the entire state, under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi, we are all committed to good governance…” he told news agency ANI.

Congress against BJP in Ujjain rape case

The incident sparked a war of words between the Congress party and the BJP, with the opposition party turning its guns on the “deteriorating law and order” in the state, pointing out that the crime took place in Chief Minister Mohan Yadav's constituency.

Lok Sabha and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi on Friday described brutality against women as a “stain on humanity” and alleged that “propaganda-centric” governments had created a callous system whose biggest victims were women.

“The brutality against women in Ujjain and Siddharthnagar is a stain on humanity. The ever-increasing number of crimes against women and the attitude of the police towards the victims and their families are a proof of the cruelty of the system and a cause of grave concern for the country,” Gandhi said in a Hindi post on X.

Madhya Pradesh Congress president Jitu Patwari has questioned the silence of senior politicians, including Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav and Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan.

State BJP chief VD Sharma said the Congress party is politicising the incident. “The Congress party has no problem in cornering the Madhya Pradesh government and that is why they are trying to give such a tone to the incident… The BJP government is the first government to bring a law providing for death penalty for the perpetrators of these kinds of incidents… The accused have been arrested and the state government will ensure that strict action is taken against them,” Sharma said.
