Delhi man dies after being hit and dragged 10 metres by a car in Connaught Place – The Week

A man was reportedly killed when he was hit by a car and dragged for about 10 metres in Connaught Place, officials said on Saturday.

According to officials, the incident occurred on Wednesday. The driver, who fled the scene of the accident after the incident, was arrested the next day, police said.

The person hit by the car was identified as Lekhraj (45), a homeless man. Though he was rushed to the hospital, he could not be saved.

According to a police official, the driver, 28-year-old Shivam Dubey, was tracked down using CCTV footage near the area.

Officials said Dubey had borrowed the car from a friend in south Delhi's Mahipalpur to meet someone in Connaught Place. On his way back at around 3.25 pm, the car he was driving allegedly hit Lekhraj, who was crossing the road near Barakhamba Radial Road in Connaught Place.

The man was allegedly dragged for about 10 metres and the driver allegedly fled the scene, leaving Lekhraj on the road.

After fleeing from the Connaught Place area, Dubey returned the car to his friend. The CCTV footage was checked and the owner of the car was identified. Later, Dubey was arrested and charged under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

Police said the car involved in the accident had also been impounded. Further investigations are ongoing, officials said.
