The spokesman said: “We were called at 5.51pm on Tuesday 3 September after the body of a woman in her 30s was found near Whaddon Lane, Owslebury.

“Due to the initial circumstances, we have begun investigations which point to a possible homicide.

“This decision has been made to ensure that the highest standards are met in the gathering of evidence to determine the cause of death. However, officers have remained impartial throughout our investigation.

“An autopsy was carried out yesterday (Friday, September 6) and we can now confirm that her death is no longer being treated as suspicious.”

Detective Chief Inspector Matt Gillooly, who led the investigation, said: “We fully understand the concerns you may have had when you heard the news that her death was being investigated as possible murder.

“I would like to assure you that following yesterday’s investigation we are convinced that this is no longer the case.

“Our initial police response to this was forceful and that may have worried some people in the community, but it was the right decision to ensure we conducted the most thorough investigation possible.

“I would like to thank everyone who contacted us with information, CCTV and dashboard camera footage. They have helped us get a clearer picture of what happened.

“Above all, I would like to thank the family for their help in our investigation.

“On behalf of the family, I would like to ask the media to respect their privacy.

“They will continue to be supported by specialist officers while a file is prepared for the coroner.”

The woman has not yet been officially identified.
