The government orders all prisons to provide land for the construction of mosques and churches

All prisons in the country have been ordered to provide land for the construction of mosques and churches as part of the spiritual reforms.

Deputy Commissioner General of Prisons Nicholas Maswai made the announcement during the opening of the donor-built Machakos Prison Mosque.

He stressed that spiritual empowerment is a central part of the reform programme for both prisoners and staff.

Maswai said the Kenya Prison Service was ready to provide land for religious institutions and donors were urged to support the initiative.

The Deputy Commissioner also highlighted the recruitment of Muslim Maalims in 2021 and plans to recruit more religious leaders of different faiths.

“The Kenya Prison Service is ready to provide land, wherever possible, to donors who wish to build mosques and churches. We are enthusiastic about this idea and will support those who help us in this,” Maswai noted.
