Mahila Congress protests against rape incidents in Madhya Pradesh

Ujjain (Madhya Pradesh), September 7 (ANI): The Mahila Congress on Saturday protested against the recent incidents of rape in Ujjain and across Madhya Pradesh, including the shocking incident in which a woman was allegedly raped on a pavement in broad daylight while passersby filmed the crime and posted the video on the Internet.

The protesters submitted a memorandum to the administration demanding severe punishment for the accused.

While the accused was taken into police custody, another person involved in the filming of the alleged rape incident two days ago was also arrested, police said. A woman from Thana Kotwali area of Ujjain had filed a rape complaint two days ago. According to earlier reports, a woman constable was called to record her statement and the higher-ups were immediately informed. Following the complaint, an FIR was filed naming Lokesh as the accused.

A police team was quickly formed to trace Lokesh. Within two hours of filing the complaint, Lokesh was arrested and taken to the police station for questioning, where he confessed to the crime. The woman was medically examined and Lokesh was produced before the court. As per the court's order, Lokesh was sent to Bherugarh jail. The woman's statement was also recorded in the court, where she corroborated her account of the incident.

Furthermore, another person who filmed the incident was arrested. Ujjain SP Pradeep Sharma said, “Two days ago, a woman was made to drink liquor and tricked into marriage by an acquaintance in Koyla Phat.” He added, “Mohammad Salim, a resident of Nagda, who made the video viral, has been arrested. His mobile phone and the video have been recovered. We are continuing to investigate.” Following the incident, Madhya Pradesh Congress leader Jitu Patwari on Friday criticised the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and questioned its silence on the recent rape incident in Ujjain. Patwari pointed out that while BJP leaders were protesting across the country against the rape and murder at RG Kar Medical College Hospital in Kolkata, they had remained silent on the Ujjain incident.

On September 4, a woman was allegedly raped in broad daylight on a public footpath in Ujjain district of the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. A video of the incident went viral on social media. Following the victim's complaint, the accused was arrested the same day and sent to jail the next day.

Speaking to ANI, Jitu Patwari said, “The BJP is protesting across the country against the rapes and murders in Kolkata, West Bengal. Meanwhile, in Madhya Pradesh, 18 women are sexually assaulted every day. A woman was raped in broad daylight on a pavement in CM Mohan Yadav's constituency. Why are MP CM Mohan Yadav, Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, the BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi silent?” He added, “Madhya Pradesh has 'Jungle Raj' when it comes to law and order. No one is safe here.” Reacting to Patwari's remarks, Madhya Pradesh BJP chief VD Sharma said, “The Congress party has no real problem in cornering the government, so they try to twist incidents like this. The Madhya Pradesh government took immediate action in the Ujjain case, arrested the accused and sent him to jail. Our government is ensuring strict action against such criminals.” Sharma added that the Madhya Pradesh government is the first in the country to impose death penalty for such crimes. (ANI)
