Jets place OL Wes Schweitzer on the injured list

After missing a large part of his first season in New York, Wes Schweitzer will visit the injured reserve again. The Jets offensive lineman will, according to coach Robert Saleh (via Brian Costello of the New York Post).

Schweitzer appeared on the injury report Thursday with a hand injury. Although the severity of the injury is unknown, there's a good chance the veteran will have a minimal stay on the injured list.

After signing a two-year deal with the Jets last season, Schweitzer landed on the injured list twice in 2023 after suffering a calf injury. He was ultimately limited to six games (two starts) in his first season with the team. In the meantime, Joe Tippman officially established as the team's starting center. Schweitzer is expected to play a backup role in 2024, but that job will be temporarily filled by 2023 UDFA Xavier Newman.

Injuries have been an issue for Schweitzer over the past three years, as he was limited to 18 games in his final two seasons in Washington between 2021 and 2022. Before that, the lineman started 54 of his 73 appearances for Washington and Atlanta.

Pro Football Focus generally rated the former sixth-round pick as a mediocre lineman in his first few NFL seasons, and recent injuries have not helped his performance. The soon-to-be free agent will need to show he's healthy in 2024 if he hopes to land a job in 2025.
