Demi Lovato documentary shows the toll of her celebrity life

“I wouldn't have ended up where I am now if I hadn't made all the decisions that led to this point. But that came at a price,” says Demi Lovato at the end of the new trailer for Child star.

At a time when documentaries like Peace on set: The dark side of children's television, Showbiz kids And Gary The upcoming Hulu documentary stirs up the conversation around child stars by examining the impact that celebrity has had on some of the most famous names in recent history. As the trailer released Thursday shows, these include Raven-Symoné, Drew Barrymore, JoJo Siwa, Kenan Thompson, Christina Ricci and Alyson Stoner – and, of course, Lovato herself.

The commercial shows people reflecting on their coming of age in an industry context. “The first time I stood in front of a professional camera, I was 16 months old,” said the former That's so Raven star Symoné tells Lovato in the trailer. “That's just how I grew up,” adds Barrymore, who grew up in an industry family but whose career took off with her role in 1982's “The Last Man.” ET

The film looks at some of the characters' joyful coming-of-age experiences, but also touches on the dangers of pursuing such a high-profile, stressful and lucrative career as a young person. Thompson says his first accountant “ran off” with his biggest paycheck, while Barrymore recalls being drugged at age 10.

The film, which Lovato co-directed with Nicola Marsh (The 12th victim), is Lovato's directorial debut. In a recently released Hollywood Reporters In the cover story, Lovato expressed that she felt she needed to examine the early part of her career in order to enter a new phase of her life. “I need to figure out why I got into this industry in the first place,” she said. In the story, Lovato also shared how shocked she was at the number of former child stars who said “no” to Child starwhile her co-director Marsh was impressed by the transparency of those who did, such as Ricci and Thompson.
