Driver dies after violent crash involving several cars in Lermoos Tunnel

A fatal accident occurred on Saturday in the Lermoos Tunnel on the Fernpass road. A driver died after a crash with the tunnel wall and other cars.

On Saturday, at 1:15 p.m., a 62-year-old Austrian was driving his car on the Fernpass road (B179) from the Fernpass towards Reutte. According to the police, the driver was not wearing a seatbelt and was alone in the vehicle.

Crash involving three cars in the Lermoos Tunnel

In the Lermoos tunnel, the man drove across the road into the left-hand tunnel wall for reasons that are still unclear, bounced off and collided with the oncoming car of a 56-year-old German. The 62-year-old's vehicle was then thrown against the right-hand tunnel wall, where it finally came to a stop. A collision then occurred between the 56-year-old German's car and the car behind it, which was driven by a 55-year-old German.

The 62-year-old Austrian suffered fatal injuries in the accident and died at the scene. The 56-year-old German and his 53-year-old passenger were injured to an unknown degree in the accident and were taken to the Reutte District Hospital by the Reutte rescue service. The 55-year-old German also suffered injuries to an unknown degree, was treated as an outpatient at the Reutte District Hospital and released to home care. His 46-year-old passenger and her parents in the back seat – aged 82 and 80 – were uninjured in the accident. In addition to rescue vehicles and the emergency medical helicopter, the fire departments of Lermoos, Ehrwald and Biberwier were also on duty with 10 vehicles and around 100 firefighters. All three vehicles were significantly damaged. The B179 was closed from 1:15 p.m. to 4:20 p.m.
