The operation lasted from 7 p.m. to 2 a.m. Around 60 officers checked a total of 179 people, the federal police announced on Sunday.

They found five knives, a telescopic baton and two pepper spray devices. They also discovered two violations of the drug law and found three people who are wanted.

“Assaults involving weapons and other dangerous tools, particularly knives, are a significant feature of the police situation in the federal police's area of responsibility and affect the safety of rail users and the general public,” the statement says. Regular checks are therefore carried out there as a deterrent. In March, more than 500 people were checked.

The police consider the main train station to be a crime hotspot – also because of the drug and drinking scene. Therefore, a weapons ban has been in place there since October 1, 2023. An alcohol ban followed in April. Politicians and the police also hope that new video cameras will increase security.

A year earlier, the Hamburg Police, the Federal Police, Deutsche Bahn and Hamburger Hochbahn founded the “Alliance for a Safe Main Station” and formed so-called “Quattro patrols”.
