On the right to freedom: Why prison escapes are not punishable in Austria – Crime

“Movie-worthy” is usually the overused adjective that describes it: the prison break is an entertainment classic, somehow romantic and exciting, no one can escape the tension. Butterfly, Escape from Alcatraz, The Shawshank Redemption. Or Prison break in series. The escape is fascinating – perhaps because you don't necessarily have to have been in prison yourself to understand the core of it, namely the fight for your own freedom. Even when viewed from the everyday cell, the real escapees become secret identification figures. The fact that they are usually portrayed as righteous and wrongly convicted in the film helps, but is not a must. This was also shown by the public interest in the most recent real case: two inmates who escaped from the Josefstadt prison in Vienna in mid-July.
