Presentation of the Apple iPhone 16: Last-minute leaks emerge

With just days left until Apple's iPhone 16 launch, last-minute leaks keep circulating, spoiling any remaining surprises. The latest spoiler comes in a new report that details some of the new flagship's camera features and provides an update on Apple's brand new touch-sensitive capture button that's set to revolutionize the way people take photos with their iPhones.

iPhone 16 Pro: Improved video features

The first news, which was reported by sources close to 9to5Macis that the upcoming iPhone 16 Pro is expected to record 4K video at up to 120 frames per second. That's double the recording speed of the current iPhone 15 Pro lineup, which is limited to 60 frames per second. Doubling the frame rate enables up to 4x slow-motion effects when shooting at the camera's highest resolution.

To make the iPhone 16 Pro live up to its “Pro” name, Apple will reportedly enable 4K ProRes video recording on external storage at 120 frames per second. Make sure your external storage is fast enough to keep up, as the minimum specs will likely be higher than the current limits.

According to the report, Apple has also been experimenting with recording 8K videos on the iPhone 16 Pro. By introducing 8K video recording, Apple could catch up with Samsung's Galaxy S24 Ultra, which already supports the feature. However, the report suggests that Apple could hold back 8K recording for the iPhone 17 Pro lineup, as next year's model is likely to come with a higher resolution zoom lens.

More details have emerged about the iPhone's new touch-sensitive capture button, which the report says “can perform different actions depending on how you press or slide it.” Pressing the button once will launch the built-in camera app or a user-selected alternative. A light press will then focus the camera, before a harder press will take a photo or start recording, depending on the camera mode selected.

This news confirms previous leaks and adds that you can adjust zoom or exposure by sliding your finger over the button. This makes making such adjustments much quicker and easier, as you don't have to lift your finger from the record button to do so.

All will be revealed at Apple's “Glowtime” event, scheduled for Monday, September 9 at 10 a.m. PT. The company is expected to announce four iPhone 16 models and at least two new Apple Watches. We'll also learn more about “Apple Intelligence” based on the company's new A18 Pro chip.
