Ever the eternal optimist, it should come as no surprise that Russell Wilson exuded positivity when discussing his potential status for the Pittsburgh Steelers' season opener against the Atlanta Falcons. Wilson's participation in the game has officially been listed as questionable after being limited during the final two practices of the week, and Pittsburgh is expected to evaluate him on Sunday morning. Justin Fields is more likely to start, according to NFL Media.

Wilson, who suffered calf tightness on Thursday, said he will play Sunday if he is able to. He added that he received “good news” after imaging showed the injury was not as serious as first feared. Wilson first injured the calf shortly before the start of training camp. He missed significant time before returning to action in Pittsburgh's final two preseason games.

“I just felt a little tight. Wanted to play it smart,” Wilson told the Tribune-Review on Friday about his practice limitations. “Obviously, I hope I can be there for Sunday's game. I'm trying to prepare for that. … We're doing everything we can.”

Wilson said he focused on throwing on Friday and didn't try to do too much, confirming he didn't work too much with the first team during practice.

Wilson said he'll have a few more chances to test his calf before kickoff. The Steelers have a walkthrough tomorrow in addition to Sunday's warmups.

Similar to the beginning of training camp, Wilson’s injury could again lead to a unexpected opportunity for backup quarterback Justin Fields, who played well during his long stint on the first team this summer. Although consistency remains an issue, Fields showed impressive accuracy on long balls this summer and also showcased his game-winning running ability.

Regardless of who plays quarterback against the Falcons, the Steelers' offense is expected to be primarily driven by running backs Najee Harris and Jaylen Warren. Harris will likely get more work as Warren is still working on his recovery from a hamstring injury.
