Spain striker Dani Olmo returns to Barcelona with knee injury

Spanish striker Dani Olmo will miss Sunday's UEFA Nations League match against Switzerland and return to Barcelona early due to a minor knee problem.

Olmo, 26, was substituted in the 82nd minute of the European champions' goalless draw with Serbia in Belgrade on Thursday.

Sources stress that it is not a serious injury, but it was decided that it would be best for him to sit out the game against Switzerland and then return to his club.

Barça, who have won all four of their La Liga games so far this season, return to league action next Sunday in Girona and coach Hansi Flick hopes Olmo will be available.

Olmo joined Barça from RB Leipzig for €55 million ($61 million) this summer, but missed the first two games of the season because he was not registered due to the club's problems complying with LaLiga's Financial Fair Play rules.

He was eventually registered and made his debut in a 2-1 win over Rayo Vallecano, scoring the winning goal, and scored again in a 7-0 win over Real Valladolid before the international break.

Barça lacks players in the midfield, where Flick has deployed Olmo. Gavi, Frenkie de Jong and Marc Bernal are all injured, while Oriol Romeu and Ilkay Gündogan left the club in the transfer window.

De Jong could return in the coming weeks while Gavi is in the final stages of his recovery from a cruciate ligament injury that has kept him out of action for almost a year; Bernal, however, is expected to miss the rest of the season.

Flick is also struggling with injury problems in defence: central defenders Ronald Araújo and Andreas Christensen are out for the foreseeable future.

Further forward, Ansu Fati is expected to be available after the international break and will provide further depth in attack following his return from a one-year loan to Premier League side Brighton.
