TMC’s Kunal Ghosh describes Jawhar Sircar’s resignation as a ‘personal decision’

Calcutta (West Bengal) [India]September 8 (ANI): Following Trinamool Congress Rajya Sabha MP Jawahar Sircar's resignation from his post, his party colleague Kunal Ghosh said that the TMC was in agreement with the “spirit of his letter”, which he described as a personal decision.

“Jawahar Sarkar is a respected person. He is one of the best bureaucrats in the country. This is his personal decision, his personal letter, I cannot comment on it. He has full right to take any decision on himself,” Ghosh said while speaking to ANI on Sunday.

“We just want to say that we agree with the spirit of his letter and the questions. We share the opinion of the society, but whatever his point of view is, it is his personal decision. We also demand justice. We are on the side of the society. We also demand justice,” he added.

Sircar had earlier offered his resignation to party president and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee the same day, expressing deep disappointment over the government's handling of the rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata. He urged the chief minister to take decisive action to “save the state”. “While I sincerely thank you for giving me such a great opportunity as an MP in the Rajya Sabha to represent the problems of West Bengal, I must inform you that I have decided to resign from Parliament and also from politics altogether,” Sircar said in his resignation letter.

“I have been suffering patiently for a month since the horrific incident at RG Kar Hospital and was hoping for your direct intervention with the agitating junior doctors, in the old Mamata Banerjee style,” the letter said.

Sircar, who joined TMC in 2021, also stressed his disappointment over the state government's response to corruption, especially the former education minister's involvement in corruption.

“I will soon go to Delhi and tender my resignation to the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha. I will also completely retire from politics. Please do something to save the state. My greetings and best wishes accompany you,” Sircar said.

The TMC government in West Bengal has faced severe criticism following the death of the trainee doctor, which led to widespread protests and a subsequent CBI investigation into both the murder and financial irregularities at the hospital.

The body of the trainee doctor was found in the seminar room of RG Kar Hospital on August 9. The incident sparked nationwide protests. Soon after, a volunteer was arrested. The CBI also arrested Dr Sandip Ghosh for alleged financial malpractice at the medical facility. (ANI)
