Surveillance video shows fatal accident in Mobile that killed former MAMGA queen

MOBILE, Alabama (WALA) – FOX10 News has exclusive surveillance video showing a fatal collision in Mobile.

MPD: Arrest after fatal accident in Mobile this morning

Shortly after midnight on Sunday morning, Spencer Strickland (37) drove through a red light at the intersection of McGregor Avenue and Airport Boulevard, according to Mobile Police.

38-year-old Katherine Smith died in the accident.

Strickland is accused of manslaughter.

The surveillance video shows the light turning red and nearly six seconds passing as Strickland's pickup truck approaches the red light.

…doesn't seem to be slowing down.

Smith was crossing the road to the airport when she was hit directly on the driver's side.

Close friends of Katherine Smith speak out after her tragic death.

Smith was a member of the Mobile Area Mardi Gras Association and served as the 2017 MAMGA Court Queen.

Smith was a graduate of the University of Southern Mississippi.

Marcus Catchings is MAMGA’s PR representative.

Catchings says Smith was not only an amazing queen, but also an amazing human being.

“Katherine is a… her smile stays with me. Her laugh is as infectious as they are. She's a woman you watch grow up before your eyes,” said Catchings emotionally. “And of course, we don't think we'll see these turning points in life where our jewels of Mobile pass before us and think they still have many, many years ahead of them.”

According to jail records, Strickland is scheduled to appear in court Monday morning for a bail hearing.
