Aston Villa player ‘may be tempted’ to sign new contract – Villans man to ‘take his chance’

Aston Villa's Lucas Digne was called up from France at short notice for the international break in September after Real Madrid's Ferland Mendy sustained an injury.

The 31-year-old last played for Les Bleus in June 2022. The left-back was on the bench against Italy last week and could play later today against Belgium.

L'Equipe now reports that the Aston Villa player could not hide his joy when he received a call from the national team last Monday.

Didier Deschamps had not considered the full-back for the 2022 World Cup or the 2024 European Championship. In the summer, the player had even thought that his time with France was “over”.

He was enthusiastic and this was visible to Deschamps and his staff during training sessions.

The defender is facing a crucial season at Aston Villa, who have returned to Europe's biggest stage for the first time in over four decades.

Digne is well aware that keeping a place in the national squad will not be easy. L'Equipe says he must “know how to take his chance every time he plays” and he will face Belgium.

His game has continued to improve under Unai Emery's leadership. Digne's contract runs until 2026 and L'Equipe claim the Frenchman “might even be tempted” to sign a new deal at Aston Villa.

If Digne takes his chances with the French national team, he could secure his place in the national team. This could lead him to sign a contract extension with Aston Villa, as that club helped him return there.
