In a Facebook post on September 8, the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority said on September 8 that enhanced security checks for incoming travellers and transport would be carried out at all checkpoints in Singapore.

The reason for this is the “worsening security situation in the region”.

During the affected period from September 9 to 14, travelers should expect delays at checkpoints due to increased controls and allow additional time for entry, the ICA said.

Security situation

Although the ICA did not provide any information on the security situation, the period coincides with Pope Francis' planned visit to Singapore from September 11 to 13.

In Indonesia, the first stop on his Asia-Pacific tour, seven people were arrested and detained after a terrorist attack on the 87-year-old failed.

Some of those arrested are said to have sworn allegiance to IS and published statements and images on the Internet in which they threatened to bomb public meetings of the Pope in Jakarta.

Security measures were subsequently increased and he was protected by a force of 4,000 men until his departure.

The Pope is currently in Timor-Leste, the third stop on his journey, where he received thousands of people. News from the Vatican reported.

He will stay there before leaving for Singapore on September 11 to conclude his tour.
