NFL star Tyreek Hill scores a touchdown for the Miami Dolphins and celebrates in handcuffs, hours after being arrested by police

Tyreek Hill was arrested by police just hours before the start of the Miami Dolphins' 2024 NFL season – but he managed to reach the field and score a touchdown.

The superstar wide receiver was spotted in handcuffs in several videos right outside Hard Rock Stadium before the game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

NFL insider Adam Schefter reported: “Dolphins WR Tyreek Hill was stopped by police today as he entered the stadium for violating traffic laws, according to his agent Drew Rosenhaus. However, Rosenhaus said Hill will play today.”

Drew Rosenhaus said, “I just left Tyreek and he's getting ready to play today.”

ESPN reported that Hill was charged with reckless driving after being stopped for speeding.

A verbal argument with a police officer then ensued, which resulted in him being laid to the ground and handcuffed.

His teammate Calais Campbell is said to have stopped to help de-escalate the situation.

Hill arrived at the stadium in time for kickoff and, after a quiet first half, scored the first touchdown of the season, bringing the Dolphins back within touching distance of the Jaguars.

The receiver was found by quarterback Tua Tagovailoa for a trademark 80-yard touchdown, and in his celebration he faked an arrest by putting his hands behind his back in front of the Miami fans, with Jaylen Waddle also doing his part.

After finishing the game with seven pass catches and a 130-yard touchdown, Hill told NFL Network's Tom Pelissero that he had “no idea” why he was handcuffed.

Miami-Dade Police Director Stephanie Daniels told NFL Network that the bodycam footage was being reviewed – and confirmed later in the day that an officer had been placed on leave.

“Following the incident involving Tyreek Hill, I initiated an internal investigation to ensure a thorough review of the matter,” Dade said in a statement.

“One of the officers involved in the incident has been placed on administrative duty pending the investigation,” Daniels said.

“I am committed to transparency and accountability to the community in all situations involving my officers.”

It is reminiscent of the situation that world number one golfer Scottie Scheffler faced during this year's PGA Championship.

Scheffler was handcuffed and charged with assaulting a police officer just hours before his tour, a charge that was later dropped.

Shortly after the incident, the Miami Dolphins released a statement saying: “This morning, WR Tyreek Hill was stopped and briefly detained by police for a traffic accident approximately one block from the stadium.

“He has since been released. Several teammates saw the incident and stopped to offer help.

“Tyreek and all other players involved have arrived safely at the stadium and will be available for today's game.”

Hill is one of the best wide receivers in the NFL and has been selected to the Pro Bowl in each of his eight seasons.

He won the Super Bowl with the Kansas City Chiefs before moving to the Dolphins.

Last season, he caught 13 touchdowns in the regular season and amassed 1,799 yards – the most of his career to date.

“We are aware of the recent arrest of Miami Dolphins player Tyreek Hill by officers of the Miami-Dade Police Department,” Daniels said in an initial statement.

“I have requested an immediate review of all the details of the incident and we are also reviewing available body camera footage.

“We will provide updates as more information becomes available.”

There had been speculation about Hill's status for the season opener after reports that he was battling a thumb injury.

However, earlier this week he allayed those concerns.

“I'm fine, man, I'm fine,” Hill said. “I just needed a few days off.”

“That's it. I'm fine, man. I'm healthy. All my fantasy, draftees, and draft people are fine. Totally fine. 100%. I just wanted to troll you guys a little bit.”
